What should you ask your relocation company about temporary housing?

Ask how long the housing lasts, what kind of home it is, where it is, and what happens if your home search or your closing runs late. Then ask who you call when something breaks.

Most relocation packages include a period of furnished housing while you find a permanent home. Your employer sets the policy, and a relocation company usually runs it. This guide lists the questions to ask before you accept the housing, and explains why each answer matters.

What to know first

  • The housing is a bridge between homes. Its job is to let you choose a permanent home with local knowledge, not from a map in your first week.
  • Location matters more than size. A home near the area where you plan to buy or rent lets you see neighborhoods after work.
  • A house is a fair request for a family. Children, pets, and a school district usually point to a single-family home, not a one-bedroom apartment.
  • Plan for the stay to run long. Home searches and new-build closings often take longer than the policy assumes.
  • Ask early. Your relocation company sets up housing weeks ahead. A late change has fewer options.

The questions to ask

AskWhy it matters
How many days of temporary housing does my package include? It sets the deadline for your home search. Ask the question in writing.
Can the housing be a furnished single-family home?A family with children or pets needs bedrooms, a full kitchen, and a yard.
Can the home be near the area where we plan to live? You can drive the commute and see schools before you commit.
Can we stay in a school district we are considering?Children can start the school year in the district where you plan to buy.
What happens if our closing or our search runs late?An extension in the same home means one move, not two.
Can we bring our pets?It changes which homes fit. Say it at the start.
What does the home include?Furniture, linens, a full kitchen, and Wi-Fi mean you can work from day one.
Who do I call if something breaks at night? You need a maintenance number that someone answers at night, not only a form.
Who do I contact to change dates?A name, not a general inbox, saves days when plans change.

Houston, Dallas, and Austin: what changes the answer

Houston

Houston is large, and the direction of your commute matters more than the distance. Downtown, the Energy Corridor on the west side, and The Woodlands to the north are far apart. Pick temporary housing on the same side of the metro as your office and the neighborhoods you are considering, such as Cypress to the northwest or The Woodlands to the north. Drive the commute at rush hour before you sign anything permanent.

Dallas–Fort Worth

Many employers have offices in the northern suburbs, so a lot of relocating families look at Plano, Frisco, Allen, McKinney, and Richardson. School districts in this area follow city lines only in part, so check the district for each address, not the city name. If your office is in Fort Worth or the Mid-Cities, look west of Dallas instead, for example in Keller or Grapevine.

Austin

Much of the region's growth is north of the city, in Round Rock, Pflugerville, and Cedar Park. New-build communities are common in these suburbs, and so are construction delays. If you are buying a home that is not finished, ask your relocation company early how an extension works.

What this looks like when it goes well

A family moving to Austin was closing on a new build when construction slipped by two months. They did not want to sign a 12-month lease to cover a two-month gap. We placed them in a four-bedroom home in Cedar Park, 10 minutes from the new build, until the house was ready.

Where this guide is limited

Your employer and your relocation company set the terms of your package: how long the housing lasts, what it covers, and how extensions work. We cannot tell you what your package includes. Ask your relocation contact, and ask for the answer in writing.

Our homes are furnished single-family homes. For a single employee on a short assignment who wants to live downtown, an apartment may fit better.

Frequently asked questions

Who books the temporary home?

Usually your relocation company or your employer. You can ask them to request a Texas Corporate Homes home by name.

Can we extend if our home search takes longer?

Ask your relocation company how extensions work in your package. When an extension is arranged, you stay in the same home, at the same address.

Can we bring our pets?

Pets are normal in our homes. Tell your relocation company about each pet when they set up the housing.

Do we need to put our furniture in storage?

Our homes are fully furnished, so your household goods can stay in storage or in transit until your permanent home is ready. Ask your relocation company how your package handles storage.

What happens on move-in day?

Check-in is 4 PM. Your move-in information arrives before you do, with the Wi-Fi details, the trash day and notes about the neighborhood.
